Hidden crisis in osteoporosis diagnosis and fracture prevention to be highlighted at QMU conference
Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh will host a major national event this spring aimed at tackling the growing public health challenge of osteoporosis - an underdiagnosed condition that leads to hundreds of thousands of preventable fractures each year.
On Wednesday 20 May 2026, the University will welcome clinicians, researchers, allied health professionals, students, and individuals with lived experience to the Lydia Osteoporosis Symposium, a free full day‑ conference dedicated to practical approaches for improving bone health and enhancing osteoporosis healthcare.
Osteoporosis affects millions across the UK, yet awareness and treatment rates remain low. One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime, often with life‑changing consequences. Despite this, the condition remains significantly undertreated - something the Lydia Osteoporosis Project is working hard to change.
Building on the success of previous QMU osteoporosis events, this year’s symposium will combine expert presentations, practical workshops, panel discussions, and lived ‑experience insights, creating a highly interactive forum for collaboration across sectors.
Attendees will explore topics including:
- advances in osteoporosis diagnosis and management
- practical strategies for fracture prevention
- nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle approaches to supporting long‑term bone health
- real ‑world insights from individuals living with osteoporosis
- opportunities to improve care pathways and early detection
Vicki Waqa, from the Lydia Osteoporosis Project, said: “Currently, there’s just not enough public or professional awareness of osteoporosis. We are therefore looking to welcome healthcare professionals, researchers, students, policy influencers, community organisations, and members of the public to help improve understanding of osteoporosis and promote better prevention, early detection and treatment across the UK.
“Importantly, our event welcomes anyone living with osteoporosis or osteopenia, as well as those who care for or support someone affected by these conditions.”
